Child in a Tree
20 September 2007 | art, drawing | No Responses

Stymied in the studio, I was walking with my daughter when she began to climb in a tree. She was doing quite well in low hanging cedar branches, so I began to sketch, I think this is one of my favorite subjects, and the sight of her climbing in the branches hugging (that’s right!) the tree was irresistable.
Man Under Tree- An Outdoor Meeting
16 September 2007 | art, drawing | No Responses

This is an in progress charcoal drawing of figures outdoors. A man is seated under a tree and is met by a woman who has approached from the left. Houses appear in the background, and a person in the tree peers down. This is a reappearance of a theme I had explored a number of times prior: the boy up in the tree looking on. The seated male figure is an internalized one, that is, represents various facets of an identity close to me.
Note: destroyed 9/15.
Afternooon Idyll

On a weekend afternoon, a person lies on the grass in the park. A good time to do some sketches of figures in various attitudes, in groups and with pets or children, all of which can become fodder later on in a studio painting. Perhaps not literally copied into the painting, yet used in some way as a piece of a larger composition. It is fascinating at a time like this to watch all the people at rest, stopping briefly or passing by. Having a free park full of models is good as well.
Washing the car

A neighbor was washing her car, so I took the opportunity to make a quick sketch. I do not usually do much in my pictures with cars, trucks and mechanical things. I think I could count two paintings I have ever done that included a car. There is no good reason for this other than it just doesn’t interest me. But this has the person beside the car with a hose, and that gives scale and emphasizes the human element rather than the machine.
A spray of water would be amusing to paint in this context. It brings to mind someone else getting wet from the spray, something that seems to happen a lot when a car is being washed.
The Hat

Putting on a hat seems to be one of the first things a child can do with clothing. Shoes are another fascination, but unless they are slip on, it can be too difficult to do unaided. The hat is simple; on it goes and it stays usually. Even when running around with little else on, a hat just seems to work.
