Moulin Rouge; belle époque costumed model

B bust with feathers

B was modeling for the portrait group again tonight with feathers and black lace in a revisit to the Moulin Rouge of 1890’s. She was stunning in her role.

Ink wash, I just love ink and water.

Still life 1, ink wash

I have always love ink drawing. Adding water and using brush makes it dramatic and liberating and fun like painting. As a drawing medium, it has the unique quality that it can not be erased or altered once down. It is a one shot deal. This is a challenge, but the immediacy lends ink wash a kind of life force. I must to put it down on the paper with conviction. This little still life in a window was done quickly, in a few minutes.

Jess again, this time after Corot

Jess after Corot

Earlier I posted sketches of Jess, modeling for the portrait class. She had on a dashing feathered hat. This week she was back, as a 19c French peasant girl in a setting after the French artist Corot. I have always loved Corot’s work, and not only because he lived in the 19th c. Jess gave us a glimpse of Papa Corot, for which we thank her.

Appearance changed

The sketchbook pages are all still here, but I have altered the appearance. I like the new theme detail photo in the header and I may install new ones from time to time. The whole thing is searchable now, though I still think random browsing is more interesting. There you have it dear audience- I hope you both enjoy the new format.

Emily

Again sat in on Trish’s studio with the model. This time it was a portrait session, and the model was a young woman who has lots of curly red hair. This was fun to paint. It is 11×14 inches.

Figure studio painting

A couple of weeks ago I sat in on a figure model studio run by my friend Trish. This color sketch of the seated woman was the result. It is spontaneous and without much detail, but it is straightforward and has dramatic light. The painting is 9×12 inches.
